The bad straw & sunscreen preemption bill, SB 588 (Sen. Hutson), will be voted on in the Senate Community Affairs Committee this Tuesday, April 2nd, at 2pm.

SB 588 bans local straw ordinances for five years while the Department of Environmental Protection studies the impact of plastic straws. Additionally, the bill permanently bans local sunscreen reef-protection ordinances, like the one Key West recently passed banning oxybenzone and octinoxate.

Please call the Community Affairs Committee members and ask them to vote NO on SB 588. Here’s an example of what to say:

Hello, my name is _____ and I’m calling to ask Sen. _____ to vote no on SB 588, “Preemption of Local Regulations.” Our local governments must be able to protect their beaches and reefs from plastic pollution and the impact of harmful chemicals. “INSERT YOUR OWN THOUGHTS/COMMENTS HERE”.
